Main research interests - design and synthesis of new inorganic compounds with isolated cluster fragments or low-dimensional extended systems of homo- or heteronuclear metal-metal bonds; the search for new compounds featuring drastic anisotropy of physical properties; determination of correlations between crystal and electronic structures of such compounds.

Objects of research - mixed subchalcogenides, subhalides, and subchalco-halides of metals in combinations transition-main group and main group-main group metal.

Principal approaches and methods of investigation

Investigation of solid-state interaction in corresponding systems; cluster synthesis in non-aqueous solutions; crystal growth from gas phase using chemical transport reactions, also from solutions and melts; X-ray crystallography and electronic structure calculations.

X-ray powder and single-crystal analysis, IR-spectroscopy, semi- and nonempirical electronic structure calculations, magnetic susceptibility and electric conductivity measurements, differential thermal analysis.
