General information

The Department of Inorganic Chemistry delivers both basic course in inorganic chemistry for the first year students and the special courses for senior students and postgraduates.

The freshmen (215 students each year) start to study the inorganic chemistry from their very first days at the department of Chemistry. The program of the course delivered during the first two terms includes the princi ples of general chemistry and chemistry of elements. The exercises are subdivided into auditorial time such as lectures and seminars, total 6 hours a week, and laboratory practice, 8-10 hours a week. The knowledges of students are controlled by colloquials and control works. At the end of each term the students should have the results of their practical laboratory work approved and should pass through the theoretical exams. The rating system, taking into account the results in each kind of reported activity, is used to monitor how the students master their program.

The Department is also responsible for teaching of a group of students specializing in "Perspective processes and materials". The specialized group No 12 was organized at the Faculty of Chemistry due to the initiative of the Full member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Professor V.A.Legasov. The creation of this group was required by the need in preparation of specialists in the field of Materials science and diagnostics of materials. Since 1988 this group works under supervision of Professor Yu.D. Tretyakov. During this period the upgraded courses in physical and mathematical disci plines, original courses in solid state chemistry and materials science were delivered to more than 100 students. Many of them have fulfilled their di ploma research works at the Department and the best one became post-graduate students and staff members of the Department. Only in the last year, 1995, by the graduates of the first promotions of the 12th groups were presented three brilliant Ph.D. Theses (by V. Fuflygin, S. Chernyaev and E. Gudilin). In the 1996/97 scholar year the 112, 212 and 312 groups unite more than 40 students. The chemistry courses delivered are aimed at presentation of the modern problems and approaches in the inorganic chemistry of materials. Annually more than half of the students of this group choose the Department of Inorganic Chemistry for their di ploma research work.

Starting from the 6th term, the students that have chosen the Department for their future specialization, begin to study the special disci plines. The tutors and researchers of the Department deliver the lecture courses devoted to the main aspects of modern inorganic chemistry, investigation of inorganic compounds, fundamental princi ples of the synthesis of inorganic compounds and chemistry of inorganic materials. The courses are also delivered to the post-graduates. The laboratory practice at senior level is aimed at mastering the modern techniques of inorganic chemistry and analysis of inorganic substances.

The final step of the specialization is the fulfilling and presentation of the di ploma research work, which is superwised by a member of teaching or research staff of the Department. The topics of these works are chosen in a way to make them a part of the research process at the Department.
